KUWAIT CITY, Feb 21: Toyo Golf Tournament was organized last Friday 10th Feb 2017 at the Sahara Golf Club. It was the 34th year of this prestigious event, which is organized in the month of February each year to commemorate the National and Liberation Days. Appropriately the trophy is called the Liberation Cup. A distinctive feature of this open tournament is that it attracts golfers from all sections of the society, and includes both Sahara Club members as well as other golf enthusiasts. There was an overwhelming request for participation, and eventually 100 players were shortlisted. This year a new provision was introduced so as to ensure a level playing field – the players were divided into two divisions based on their handicap : Division A (Handicap 0 to 14) and Division B (Handicap 15 to 28). As usual, the game was played in the ‘Stableford’ format, which allows for relatively speedy play. The pleasant mildly-cold weather last Friday contributed to a good game in the undulating contours of the verdant 18-hole Championship Golf course.
The youngsters ruled the roost with teenage prodigies Ahmad Al-Bader and Faisal Al-Wilayati coming up trumps in Division A and Division B respectively. Both these golfers started playing golf at an early age and have progressively fine-tuned their game over the years. Abdulwahab Al-Musalum was the runners-up in Div-A and SJ Park in Div-B. Among other prizes, Jae Jin Kim won the prize for Longest Drive and Fred Chrstens for Nearest to Pin in Men’s category. In Ladies, Clare Hunter came with a brilliant performance so as to win both these prizes. Finally, the coveted trophy for Best Gross was won by the veteran Joon Ho Bae who achieved a fabulous score of 71 points. Prize distribution was organized in the afternoon in the gracious presence of Mishari
AlMailem and Ahmed AlMailem. Speaking on the occasion, Kuldeep Lamba, Managing Director, AlMailem Group expressed his satisfaction at the large turnout. “It is heartening to see such high level of enthusiasm in the participants for this event always”, he added, “I also take this opportunity to thank our principals Toyo Tires Japan for their unwavering commitment.” Finally, he complimented Razmic, Richard, Razmic, Cameron, Rona and other Sahara Club officials for their professional and administrative support, and expressed hope that the tournament would continue to receive the same level of encouraging response in future also.
