Flawless Heraty claims emotional win at Sahara Kuwait

South American duo Lobo and Calderon share leading amateur award

Jeo Heraty receiving the winner’s trophy from Yousef Abdulaziz Al Qatami of Sahara Kuwait as Rod Bogg of the MENA Golf Tour, and Wael Abdulrahman Al Welayti, also of Sahara Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 19 — With thoughts of his ailing father occupying his mind, Joe Heraty kept his composure to win the inaugural Sahara Kuwait Championship, providing a fitting climax to a fantastic week of golf at the MENA Golf Tour’s inaugural event in the city on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Englishman closed with a bogey-free five-under 65 to finish at 13-under par, two clear of his compatriot Daniel Owen, who signed for a brilliant six-under 64 to climb up the leaderboard.

It was Chile’s Matias Calderon, who made the biggest move, firing a brilliant 62 that matched the course record set on Monday by Heraty as he shared the leading amateur award with Brazil’s Tiago Lobo.

In a reflection on the rising standards of amateurs on the MENA Golf Tour, the South American duo joined England’s Jordan Garnish in a tie for third on 10-under.

It was young Heraty, whose father was diagnosed with brain tumor last week, who took centre-stage with a flawless round to get over the line for his maiden win on the MENA Golf Tour.

“This is for you, Dad,” an emotional Heraty said after receiving the winner’s trophy and a cheque for $9,000 from Yousef Abdulaziz Al Qatami and Wael Abdulrahman Al Welayti, both members of the Sahara Kuwait’s golf advisory committee.

“It feels just unbelievable at the moment to what I have achieved. It was a tough week, but I managed to keep my emotions in check. Made lots of birdies and didn’t hit any disastrous shots,” said the Leeds native.

England’s Owen also went bogey free, picking up two shots on the front nine and four on the back nine, his flawless round showing it’s just a matter of time before the Bahrain-based professional inscribes his name on the MENA Golf Tour trophy.

Young Lobo was equally delighted to share leading amateur award withCalderon, whose course record equaling 62 was studded with nine birdies and one bogey.

“It was a pleasure to play on this course which was set up nicely.I drove the ball well and created lots of birdie opportunities with my wedges. I may not have struck the ball that well in the final round, but managed to hole more putts which kept the round going,” added the 18-year-old Sao Paulo native who is based in Dubai.

Morocco’s Ahmed Marjan won the MENA Division for professionals on five under after carding a final round 67, beating his nearest challenger Peter Badawy of Lebanon by a good six shots while Saudi Arabia’s Khaled Attieh took the region’s leading amateur honours, one clear of his fellow countryman Othman Almulla.

“It was really fun playing in Kuwait. Finishing in red figures has certainly added to my confidence. I drove the ball well all week and holed many clutch putts,” said Marjan whose final round was highlighted by three birdies in his last four holes.

“I like the design of the course. There are good of scoring opportunities out there if you can keep the ball in play,” he added.

Elsewhere, former English cricketer Craig Kieswetter closed with a 73 despite dropping six shots, including four on the 18th, to finish in a tie for 33rd on level par.

The MENA Golf Tour travels to Oman next week for the Ghala Open to be held in Muscat from October 24 to 26. The event will be followed by the season-ending Tour Championship a week later.

England’s Archibald goes two clear at Sahara Kuwait

England’s Stuart Archibald … a flawless round

Ahmed Marjane soars with eagle in the MENA Division

KUWAIT CITY — Stuart Archibald fired a bogey-free four-under 66 to haul himself into contention for a maiden title on the MENA Golf Tour going into the final round of the Sahara Kuwait Championship on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Englishman, starting the day two off the pace, picked two shots in each half to reach 10 under for the tournament, a good two shots clear of overnight leader Joe Heraty and Scotland’s Paul Doherty.

Germany’s Aaron Leitmannstetter, who returned a flawless 64, the day’s low score, joined South Africa’s Luke Trocado and Fernand Osther of the Netherlands for a share of fourth a further shot adrift.

“I didn’t get off to best of starts, but managed to make a couple of good par saves. A birdie of the sixth, however, got me going in the right mindset. Thereafter, I played really well,” said Archibald, who has been playing on the MENA Golf Tour since 2013.

“I have been in contention quite a few times and it would be nice to get the job done this time around. But we still have 18 holes to play. Anything can happen,” said the Hampshire native.

Overnight leader Heraty, who shot a level-par 70, firmly stayed in the frame for his first title on the tour. “I played almost similar to the one I did in the first round, but conditions were a bit different today. “It was quite windy and the greens were a bit faster.

“Didn’t hole that many putts, but I am still very happy to be in this position,” said the Englishman, whose opening 62 on Monday equalled the lowest score ever shot on the MENA Golf Tour, matching that of his compatriot Joshua White in the 2014 Golf Citizen Masters in Al Ain.

Scotland’s Doherty kept it clean in the second round, putting himself in prime position for a second MENA Golf Tour tile.

“Played quite nicely. Going bogey-free always makes things easier. I think I was quite consistent out there and putted really well. Holed everything from inside 15 feet which was great.

“Going forward the thinking is to stick to the same game plan and see what happens. But I do think I am in a good position entering the final round,” said the Scotsman, who won the Royal D’Anfa Open in Morocco last year.

Former English cricketer Craig Kieswetter, who opened with a 68, dropped six shots in his first seven holes, but responded well with five birdies to sign for a 71. At three-under after 36 holes, he is placed second in the amateur division, two behind Brazil’s Tiago Lobo and Todd Clements of England.

Lobo, a Dubai-based MENA Golf Tour regular, followed his opening 68 with a 67 while Clements mixed five birdies with two bogeys en route to 67 to share 10th overall on five under.

Morocco’s Ahmed Marjan produced the shot of the day, holing his approach from 80 yards for an eagle on the par-4 first and then picked up two more shots on the back nine as he signed for a bogey-free 66.

That left him leading the MENA Division for professionals on two under 138, four clear of his compatriot Faycal Serghini and Peter Peter Badawy, who stumbled to a 77 after opening with a 65.

Saudi Arabia’s Khaled Attieh carded back-to-back 70s to reach level par for the tournament, taking a one-shot lead over his fellow countryman Othman Almulla in the amateur division for the region.

The cut was made at three over 143 with 45 professionals and 10 amateurs making it to Wednesday’s final round.

Emotional Heraty fires a 62 to hit the front at Sahara Kuwait

England’s Joe Heraty … career-best round on the MENA Golf Tour

Lebanon’s Badawi leads the MENA Division after opening with a 65

KUWAIT CITY — Joe Heraty kept his emotions in check and pulled off his career-best round on the MENA Golf Tour to get his nose in front after the opening round of the inaugural Sahara Kuwait Championship on Monday.

The 25-year-old Englishman, whose father was diagnosed with brain tumor last week, fired a sizzling eight-under 62 to open up a two-shot lead over his compatriot Stuart Archibald and Fernand Osther of the Netherlands.

England’s Craig Hinton, the winner of the Ascorp Golf Citizen Abu Dhabi Open two weeks ago, headed the chasing pack in a five-man group which included Lebanon’s Peter Badawi.

Scotland’s Jack McDonald, Fredrik From of Sweden and England’s Daniel Owen completed the group tied for fourth at five-under 65 as former English cricketer Craig Kieswetter, playing for the first time on the MENA Golf Tour, kept himself firmly in contention, carding a four-under 66.

The day belonged young Heraty, who flew off the gate in style, making back-to-back birdies to set the tone for an excellent round that contained just one bogey.

“I was just thinking about my father all the time, but managed to keep the round going. I had everything under control. I drove the ball well and holed lots of good putts,” said the Leeds native, his voice choking with emotion.

Playing in his very first event on the MENA Golf Tour, Netherland’s Osther went bogey-free in his opening 65, studded with three birdies in each half.

“Played really nicely. I don’t think I missed any green. Basically I was bang on target. Gave myself plenty of birdie opportunities and made good use of the par-5s,” said Osther, who made birdies on both the two long holes.

“If you can drive well off the tee, you can post a good score and that’s exactly what I did to keep the ball in play,” said 28-year-old Dutch golfer, who turned professional in 2012.

“I like the course. It’s a bit wide open on the front nine, but it becomes more challenging, especially after the 13th due to the narrow fairways,” said Osther, who plies his trade on the Pro Golf Tour in Europe.

Cricketer-turned golfer Kieswetter, who represented England in 46 one-dayers and 25 T-20 matches, played his last 10 holes in five under to lead the amateur division, one ahead of Brazil’s Dubai-based Tiago Lobo.

The Saudi duo of Khaled Attieh and Othman Almulla shot matching level-par 70s to share the lead in the MENA Division for amateurs while Morocco’s leading professional Faycal Serghini finished day five behind Lebanon’s Badawi.

Elsewhere, Zane Scotland, the most prolific winner on the MENA Golf Tour, returned a 67 to join Scotland’s Paul Doherty and his compatriot Lee Corfield in a tie for 13th.

Rising English amateur Sam Hobday provided the highlight of the day, acing the 116-yard par-3, 14th with a pitching wedge for the fourth hole in one feat of his career — and his first in a big tournament.

Kuwait all set to host first MENA Golf Tour event

Yousef Abdulaziz Al Qatami, member of Sahara Kuwait’s golf advisory committee, with Rod Bogg of MENA Golf Tour, and Saudi amateurs Ali Alsakha, Khaled Attieh and Othman Almulla

A fantastic test of golf awaits players at Sahara Golf and Country Club

KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait will provide a snapshot of its growing reputation as a fast-emerging golf destination when Sahara Golf and Country Club makes its debut on the MENA Golf Tour on Monday.

There is a definite buzz surrounding the Sahara Kuwait Championship that coincides with the 10th anniversary of the club as most of players will get their first look at the course, a stunning Peter Harradine-designed layout that requires precision and nerve to pass the test.

Having faced similar situations on the tour in the past, players, however, remain unfazed by the lack of local knowledge and believe it will hardly be the deciding factor as they jockey for positions of the Order of Merit.

“One practice round and you have a fair idea of what to expect. Trust your swing and have fun playing each shot as tension kills your game,” said Morocco’s Younes El Hassani, one of the regulars on the tour.

Headlined by 11 winners on the MENA Golf Tour, the field is certain to provide a grueling challenge on Kuwait’s first 18-hole grass course in addition to driving Kuwait into the global golfing spotlight.

Included in the starting line-up are five Kuwaiti amateurs who will be competing in a MENA Golf Tour event for the first time. Qatami Al Qatami, Ali Al Ansari, Abdulaziz Al Sarawi, Ali Alhajeri and Ahmed Al Sarawi will be hoping the experience of playing alongside professionals will stand them in good stead for future engagements.

“We are delighted to be part of the Mena Golf Tour as we feel the championship will be a great catalyst for the overall growth and development of the sport in our country,” said Yousef Abdulaziz Al Qatami, member of Sahara Kuwait’s golf advisory committee.

“It will not only be a great opportunity for us to showcase our championship course and other tourist attractions as well,” he said, adding: “Ours is the only grass course in the country it makes perfect sense to bring international tournaments there if we are to promote golf here.

“Also, being an Arab state, we also feel a sense of obligation to support all initiatives which target overall development of the game in the region,” he said, adding: “We have recently introduced a junior development programme aimed at promoting the game at the grassroots level.

“The (MENA) tour has done a great job in providing a springboard for the region’s players to grow and excel on the international stage. We look forward to welcoming MENA Golf Tour members and I am confident they will return home with fond memories of playing in our country.”

Mohamed Juma Buamaim, chairman of the MENA Golf Tour, said: “We feel proud and privileged to join hands with Sahara Golf and Country Club for the event which, I believe, will motivate local talent to take their game seriously and strive for excellence.”

“Their support has further strengthened our resolve to stimulate growth of golf in the region and beyond.

“We appreciate all the hard work in presenting the course in top condition. With the field comprising a great mix of experience and youth, we are headed for an entertaining week. I wish all the players the very best,” he added.

Built to PGA standards, Sahara Kuwait is a challenging a challenging par 70, 6,730 -yard layout, featuring three lakes and nearly 5,000 trees. Adding to the course’s distinctive character are its 12 holes bounded by the racetrack of the Hunting and Equestrian Club.

An initiative of the Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation, the MENA Golf Tour was created in 2011 with the aim of developing golf in the region. It is affiliated to R&A, the worldwide golf governing body based in the home of golf, St Andrews, and the Arab Golf Federation and enjoys the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) status.

Multiple European Tour starts, including the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the Hassan II Trophy and the Maybank Championship Malaysia in addition to full playing privileges on the Sunshine Tour and exemptions into the Final Stage of the Asian Tour Q-School for the leading three professionals are some of the added incentives for the MENA Golf Tour members.

Trampo Extreme Kuwait Opens Largest Location in Murouj

Nothing beats getting to act like a big kids and that’s exactly why I love Trampo; trampolines, wall climbing, and the perfect way to destress from the responsibilities of being an adult. Because, despite what you might think, Trampo is not just for kids, anyone from 2 to 92 is welcome and my second trip was particularly special as it was to celebrate their new location in Murouj.

Trampo Extreme opened its third location at Murouj – a 35,000 square-foot sporting, leisure and entertainment park. Located near the Sahara Club, the indoor park caters to both children and adults where you can jump, climb, zip line, leap, skate, and ride. “The Jump” features 10,000 square-feet of connected and angled trampolines, where you can bounce around to your heart’s delight.

Another attraction, “The Climb”, is an assortment of towering climbing walls and “The Zip” provides a maneuvering adventure where visitors can advance through ropes and ladders before arriving to a thrilling zip line ride at the end. “The Leap” allows thrill-seekers to climb up a high ledge and leap off, to grab on to a bar, while “The Drop” has you descend from a height into a medley of balloons, in the blink of an eye. Trampo Extreme also houses an indoor skate park – the largest of its kind in Kuwait – titled “Skate‘n’Ride.” The skate park caters to all riders such as BMX riders, skateboarders, and roller skaters of all skill levels.
